Getting Started…

New Riders Video

What could be more fun than kids, bikes, and dirt?

At Santa Maria BMX we provide a safe, family-oriented experience for children of all ages, as well as kids at heart!

The following is a guide for first time riders and parents:

On your first time out at a USABMX track, USABMX offers a 1 Day Free Trial Membership.  At Santa Maria BMX, we also include your first open practice session Free of Charge!

How old do I need to be?

BMX is a family sport. Children as young as 2 can be seen out on the track for practice, and racing, as soon as they can balance on a Strider and keep a full-face helmet on. Many children ride, as well as parents, young adults, and young-at-heart athletes up to 60+ years of age!

What do I bring and when can I come?

Children under 18 need to have a parent or guardian accompany them.

All riders must have a signed waiver and a current USA BMX membership in order to ride on the track (see below)

Proper clothing, bike, and helmet.

Check out our Schedule, sign up for Remind texts, like us on Facebook and Instagram to know when we are open!

What do I wear?

Riders need to be wearing long pants, long sleeves, closed-toed shoes, a full-face helmet, and gloves.

Elbow pads, knee pads, other braces, goggles, BMX-specific jerseys, and pants are all personal choices, they are not required.

Do I need a special bike?

Most bikes from home can be ridden on the track. At least to try it out. As long as you are comfortable riding it on the track. You will mostly see what are referred to as “class” or “cruiser” BMX race bikes, as well as “dirt jumpers” and Mountain Bikes. The specific guidelines for safety are as follows:

Fenders, kickstands, reflectors, and chain guard must be removed. No pegs are allowed.
Handlebars may not exceed 30” in width, grips are required and must cover/ enclose the entire opening on the handlebar ends.
The frame must be in good condition with no cracks. Brakes must be in good condition. All wheels, seats, and bars must be securely tightened.
Wheel diameter with inflated tires cannot exceed 22 inches for a class bike and must exceed 22 in for a Cruiser.

Bring your bike and let us help you check it out and get it track-ready.
